Part-Time Student Intern, User Experience
Department Information
The Experience Design & Development team within UITS works closely with partners in communication and marketing, other UITS teams, and various other departments as necessary. We are responsible for IU’s gateway websites (iu.edu, iupui.edu, Indiana.edu), as well as a number of online applications to serve students, faculty, and staff across all campuses. We are a cross-functional team composed of developers, user experience (UX) designers, and content specialists.
Our goal in all we do is to create sites and services that are inclusive (accessible), easy to use, and help our visitors accomplish their goals.

University Information Technology Services (UITS) works to develop and maintain a rich information-technology environment for Indiana University in support of IU’s vision for excellence in research, teaching, outreach, and lifelong learning.
With more than 1,500 full-time employees, UITS provides services and support for the modern, multifaceted technology environment at IU and works with more than 10,000 constituents in the university’s multi-campus system with locations across the state and the world.
Job Summary
The Experience Design & Development team is seeking a student intern for summer 2023. The intern will have the opportunity to work on a variety of tasks for various project types involving user experience, information architecture, and interface design. Our team typically works on projects associated with the main gateway sites at IU (iu.edu, Indiana.edu, iupui.edu) and to assist other teams with the design of online apps for student use.
Department-Specific Responsibilities
Works closely with the team lead, as well as with other UX and design staff on the team, to create new and improve existing IU websites and online systems.
Qualifications
Education
Required:
- Currently enrolled as a student at Indiana University.
- Successful completion of—or current enrollment in—one course in human-computer interaction, user-centered design, information architecture, or human factors.
Skills
Required:
- A passion for improving the quality and effectiveness of online sites and systems for end users.
- Ability to learn quickly and take responsibility for parts of a project.
- Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues and clients in both written and spoken formats.
- Attention to detail.
- Understanding of information architecture and principles of good site and system design.
Preferred:
- Experience using Figma, Axure, InVision XD, or other suitable applications to create rapid prototype designs for communicating interaction and design ideas.
Working Conditions/Demands
This position is primarily in an office setting. The person in this position must be able to work with a computer to perform complex operations.
Additional Information
We will work with the intern to further develop the skills needed to be successful in this position.
Work Location
Bloomington, Indiana or Indianapolis, Indiana.
This position is eligible for remote work or a hybrid work schedule (mix between remote and in-person work), subject to change in the future based on university policy and business needs.
Work Hours
The intern will work approximately 25-35 hours a week. Number of hours and official start date will be determined in collaboration with the chosen applicant’s availability.
