This internship in UITS eLearning Design & Services will assist with building and coding components of MOOCs (Massively Open Online Courses) in support of IU’s partnership with the global education platform edX. The intern would use basic HTML skills to enter course content into the edX learning management system. The intern would also modify Python code to create activities that can be delivered within the courses that IU offers on edX. This internship would expose the student to coding with an instructional angle -- code that helps improve both self-directed learning and academic integrity of fully online courses delivered at scale. Additionally, a successful intern will be able to support beta-testing of courses and explore other extensions of the edX platform.
This internship will expose a student to new horizons in online education and the MOOC space, a growing area for IU. The student will join regular brainstorming sessions with a team of professional instructional designers and technologists who support digital learning on the edX platform at IU. They will also engage in testing, discussion and implementation of educational technology applications tied to pedagogy at scale. Because this year’s internship is remote, it requires the ability to operate independently and report back on one’s work, as well as the key skills of critical thinking around systems and digital learning.
This internship would be appropriate for students with an interest in instructional technology, education, computer science, or media/communications.
Description of duties:
- Become well-versed in edX authoring tools
- Enter basic HTML elements and Python code-based problems into the edX LMS
- Beta-test online courses and provide relevant feedback
- Work with Instructional Designers and Instructional Technologists to explore extensions of the edX platform.
- Engage in brainstorming and creative problem-solving with instructional design and instructional technology team members.

- Preferred: Experience taking an online course, self-paced or otherwise
